“For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
1 Corinthians 16:20
What do you consider to be your most valuable possession?
Valuable is defined as: having desirable or esteemed characteristics or qualities; of great use or service; worth a good price.
Of all your possessions, which does this definition describe? A house? A car? A piece of jewelry? A significant other? A child? A friend? There is no right or wrong answer to this question, so take a few minutes and think about it …
Now that you have something in mind … you know that old saying … “Money talks” …
What would it take for you to begin talking about parting with this particular possession?
While all of these things mentioned above are very valuable, and some absolutely priceless, these things all at some point and time will fail, simply because these things are only meant to last for a moment. I am so thankful for the ways I’ve seen God bless my life, but my most valuable possession is not something I can see.
“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
Neither is it something that is priceless. It’s quite the opposite. My most valuable possession, my treasure, came at a very high price – it cost the perfect, sinless Son of God, Jesus Christ, His very life.
“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8
God is VALUABLE!
Jesus is VALUABLE!
The Holy Spirit is VALUABLE!
God in His entirety is the One and Only truly valuable possession there is.
Since the beginning of time God’s characteristics have been constant. The same things that made Him God so many, many years ago are still what makes Him God today.
“Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven’s lights. Unlike them, He never changes or casts shifting shadows” James 1:17
God has always given the very best service. Oh sure, the process of Him transforming us into His image may be time consuming and very laborious, but you can rest assured that whatever His means to the end is always the best formula. His formula will always equal “joy in life, and to have it in abundance” where it is so full, it’s overflowing (John 10: 10).
God is the only One who will ever be worth whatever the cost. There is nothing in this world that will ever compare to His value. Not even life itself holds a candle to His worth.
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” Acts 20:24
Now think back to your treasure … your most valuable possession … Is it a house? A car? A piece of jewelry? A significant other? A child? A friend?
Or does the MVP award go to the Only One who truly values you, the Only One who sacrificed His own Son’s life in order to prove your worth?
My precious Heavenly Father, my sweet Savior and Groom, my Comforter and my Helper in this life … Thank You for my salvation and every single thing it encompasses – the very high price that was willingly, lovingly and humbly paid in full by You. Thank You that it is offered to me and all who choose to believe. Lord I know I’ll never know the true cost of my sin. Forgive me for mistreating and devaluing that precious gift. That which brings us joy, is what tends to hold value in our hearts. Father, refocus my eyes and my heart on You. May I always see the value that You’ve placed on me through the shed blood of Your Son. I truly want to live as worthily as I can, so that Christ’s death is not in vain. I want You to be glorified in every aspect of my life, so that a lost, dying, and “headed for an eternity in hell” world might see Your value, that they might see how much You value them, and therefore choose to place their trust in You and You alone. When You formed us in our mother’s wombs You left a hole … a place that was meant just for You. As we try to fill that place with anything other than You, emptiness and discontentment will fill our soul. You are the only One who promises an abundantly joyous life … to the point it is “filled to the top and overflowing”. What peace surrounds my soul, knowing that joy can reign in and thru any situation we may face as long as our eyes and our hearts remain fixed on You. For it’s in Your strength and by His name I pray… Amen!
